Nationally Ranked Swimming and Diving Hold Lead Over Missouri at Halfway Point

The University of Louisville the No. 18-ranked men's and No. 23 women's swim team are holding off the Missouri Tigers after the first day of the two-day format Friday afternoon in the Ralph Wright Natatorium. The men lead No. 20 ranked Missouri 92-75 and the women led No. 21 ranked Missouri 86-81. The meet resumes at 11 a.m. ET Saturday in the Ralph Wright Natatorium. "I am proud of our intensity that we brought forth today," said U of L head coach Arthur Albiero. "That was the challenge we issued to them: bring the intensity. And we did that. The resolve was there. Missouri is a phenomenal team and we will have to maintain our intensity tomorrow." The Cardinals got multiple wins from junior Liz Halet, who won the 100-free and anchored both the winning 400-Medley Relay and the 200-Free Relay. Therese Bergstrom won the 100-breast and was part of the winning 400-Medley Relay. The men were led by Vali Preda who won the 200-IM and swam the breaststroke leg of the 400-Medley Relay. In the women's 200 free relay, the Cardinal women reached the wall first when the foursome of Nicole Landisch, Whitney Campbell, Aileen Cole and Liz Halet finished in 1:33.96. For the men, Brendon Andrews, Chase Grimes, Carlos Van Isschot and Adam Madarassy cruised to a win with a time of 1:22.67, a full two seconds ahead of Mizzou's A-team. In the women's 200 IM, Anna Dishuck touched first in 2:05.15 with Fanny Lilliestrom was third to score points, going 2:06.19. Abby Miller contributed as well with a fourth in 2:07.06. For the men, Vali Preda had a commanding lead heading into the wall with a time of 1:52.95. Luke Wakefield added a point in fith with a swim of 1:57.85.
In the 500-free, Amanda Henleben was the top U of L finisher with a third in 4:58.20 in a race where Missouri swept the top two spots. For the men, Shane Lichtenberg had a strong final 50 for a strong back half of the race to touch first in 4:33.02. Doug Dietrich made a late move to touch fourth in 4:40.07. In the 100-breast, Therese Bergstrom led wire to wire and touched first with a time of 1:03.73. Cardinal Fanny Lilliestrom was third in 1:04.80. For the men, Vali Preda was outtouched by two one-hundredth of a second by Martin Cernansky, who won in In the 200-back, Lauren Lavigna won for Missouri in 20184. Raine Thompson lunged for the wall but was outtouched and posted a 2:02.13. Anna Dishuck was fourth in 2:05.12. Louisville's Pedro Oliveira was second in 1:49.76. Mizzou's Konarzewski won the event in 1:48.15. In the 100-free, Liz Halet held on for the win, going 51.10. Whitney Campbell was third in 52.00 and Aileen Cole was fourth in 52.23. The men swept the top three spots, with Andrei Radzionau touching in 45.49, Carlos Van Isschot posted a time of 45.57 and freshman Brendon Andrews went 45.73, holding off Missouri's Jordan Hawley who finished in 45.81. In the 200-fly, Abby Miller tried to run down winner Melissa Jamerson (2:04.14) and held on for second in 2:05.35 and Jenny Schimenti was third in 2:05.50. For the men, Rafal Kuchta had a strong back half and held on to win in1:50.24. Teammate Pedro Oliveira held off MU's Gilad Kaufman for second and posted a time of 1:50.26. In the 400-medley relay, the foursome of Raine Thompson, Therese Bergstrom, Nicole Landisch and Liz Halet had a signature swim of 3:46.74, slashing three seconds off the pool record for the Cardinals. The men set a pool record as well,Carlos Van Isschot, Vali Preda, Adam Madarassy combine with Andrei Radzionau anchoring the A-team, for a time of 3:20.79. In 1-meter diving, MU's Jordan Morcom won with a score of 282.15 for the women. Kayla Purkiser was the top Cardinal finisher at third with a score of 2:59.05. For the men, Greg DeStephen took the event for the Tigers with a score of 342.67. David Zamkov had 269.25 as the top U of L placer. |
