Winning 23 races and setting six pool records, the University of Louisville men's and women's swimming and diving team swept BIG EAST rival West Virginia Saturday in Morgantown. The men won 187-113 with the women prevailing 200-97 for their second win in two days.

"I am pleased on how we handled a tough road trip," said U of L head coach Arthur Albiero. "This is great preparation for the championship part of our season. Our team took the challenge and performed with great poise today. The majority of our team swam seven races in less than 24 hours."

Multiple winners Brendon Andrews (50-, 100-free), Leslie VanWinkle (200-free, 200-IM), and Therese Bergstrom and Carlos Almeida (100-, 200-breast, 200-IM) paced the Cardinals. U of L continued its winning ways in the relays. In the first event of the meet, Whitney Campbell, Therese Bergstrom, Raine Thompson and Kara Savegnago combined for the winning time of 1:44.95 in the 200-medley relay. For the men in the same event, Carlos Van Isschot, Carlos Almeida, Brendon Andrews and Matt Schlytter partnered to win in 1:32.87. In the final event of the day, the 200-free relays locked in the win for both the men and women. In that race, Whitney Campbell, Nicole Landisch, Liz Halet and Kara Savegnago touched first in 1:34.62. For the men, Matt Schlytter, Carlos Van Isschot, Sergiu Daghid and Chase Grimes touched first in 1:25.43.

 

 

In the grueling 1650-free, U of L's Amanda Henleben touched in 17:04.70 for the win with teammate Shane Lichtenberg winning for the men in 16:01.79. In the 200-free, Leslie VanWinkle had her first win with a time of 1:50.49.

In the 100-back, Eszter Povazsay set a pool record with a win in 56.64 and Kara Savegnago (57.39), Raine Thompson (57.85) made it a sweep of the top three spots for the Cardinals. Not to be outdone, Carlos Van Isshot set a new pool record with a swim of 50.12 and freshman Alex Burtch was second in 1:56.10.

In the 100-breast, Therese Bergstrom boarded a time of 1:03.51 for the Cardinal win. Freshman Heather Holtom was second, going 1:05.93 for the Cards. In the men's 100-breast, Carlos Almeida was first, posting a time of 57.01.

In the 200-fly, Pedro Oliveira was first in 1:50.65 with teammate Rafal Kuchta touching second in 1:52.62.

In the 50-free, Whitney Campbell was first with a time of 23.43 for the women and Brendon Andrews won with a time of 21.08.

In the 3-meter diving, newcomer Hannah Gadd posted a score of 291.61 for first and teammate Lindsey Stephens placing second with a score of 288.00.

Brendon Andrews notched his second win with a 46.36 in the 100-free. In the 200-back, Eszter Povazsay (2:01.75) and Anna Dishuck (2:05.60) went one-two.

The Cardinal women swept the top three spots in the 200-breast led by Therese Bergstrom (2:18.68) followed by Leslie VanWinkle (2:21.92) and Heather Holtom (2:21.93). Carlos Almeida won for the men in 2:04.56. Nicole Landisch took the 100-fly in 56.15 in another Cardinal win.

Hannah Gadd set a pool record with a 295.35 in the 1-meter board just ahead of teammate Kayla Purkiser's 273.75. In the 200-IM, Leslie VanWinkle set a pool record with a time of 2:04.95 with U of L's Fanny Lilliestrom touching second in 2:06.88. Carlos Almeida won the 200-IM for the men with a time of 1:52
