The Student Development Program is designed to support the development of a well-balanced lifestyle for student-athletes, encouraging emotional well-being, personal growth and decision-making skills.


Student Development Programming

  • The Derek Smith Leadership Academy: The Leadership Academy is designed to prepare our student-athletes to be leaders in the classroom, in the community and in competition. These monthly seminars examine different topics of leadership including Communication, Conflict Resolution, Problem Solving, Respect, Decision Making, Personal Branding and other critical leadership topics.

  • Performance Team - This team has been created to assist in the personal and athletic development of the Cardinal student-athlete. The education, assistance, and action models are supported by a team of talented athletic trainers, nutritionists, strength and conditioning coaches, physicians, sport psychologists, athletic department administrators and numerous other specialists. Performance team programming gives student-athletes and coaches the opportunity to gather information to support a healthy lifestyle and achieve optimum athletic performance.

  • Menu Picks - Continuing education occurs each semester with coaches organizing 2-3 menu picks for their teams. These workshops are conducted by Performance Team Members, University of Louisville Staff, Athletic Department Staff and Community Volunteers. Menu pick options (PDF).

  • Healthy Lifestyles - In an effort to educate student-athletes on the importance of this component in the early stages of their collegiate career, student-athletes are required to take this course. The purpose of this course falls in line with the overall goals and objectives of the LCare Program and is designed specifically to explore the biological, psychological, and sociological influences that promote healthy lifestyles and wellness.

  • Seminars - The L-Care Program sponsors guest speakers to address the student-athletes, spirit groups, and coaching staffs during each academic year. Guest speakers are asked to address personal development and social issues. These speakers include Performance Team members, Community Agencies, Athletic Department Staff and University of Louisville Faculty/Staff.

  • Cardinal Cup Get Acrobat Reader - The Cardinal Cup is a competition between every team throughout the school year. Student-athletes earn points by attending events and participating in community service during the year. At the end of the year, points will be totaled and the male team and female team winner of the Cardinal Cup will be crowned at the annual All Sports Banquet. The respective male and female team winners will also be awarded with adidas products for each athlete on your team.

  • S.A.A.C - The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is a committee comprised of two to three student-athletes from each team at UofL and are assembled to provide insight on the student-athlete experience. The SAAC offers input on NCAA, BIG EAST, and UofL rules, regulations, and policies. The SAAC also plans a variety of social events and community outreach activities for the student-athlete body.
  • L.I.F.E. - The Louisville International Family Enrichment (L.I.F.E.) program assists international student-athletes in acclimating to American culuture and prepares them for success at the University of Louisville. The L.I.F.E program provides an opportunity for international student-athletes to meet, discuss common interests and celebrate the array of cultures represented on campus. The L.I.F.E. program is organized by students to encourage understanding and enhance educational opportunities.

  • S.C.O.R.E. - Student-Athletes of Color combining Opportunity and Responsibility for Excellence - A program designed to improve the overall student life experience of minority student athletes. This is accomplished with outreach programs, mentoring, and social activities.

  • Exit Interview - Each spring, senior exit interviews are conducted with student-athletes who have exhausted their eligibility. Information gathered from these interviews enable athletic administration to make the necessary changes to improve student-athlete programming and services to better meet the needs of all student-athletes.
  • Events

  • Welcome Back - At the beginning of each academic year, the athletic department hosts a Welcome Back event.
  • New Student-Athlete Orientation - All freshmen and transfer student-athletes are required to attend the half-day orientation program, which includes team building activities and presentations from Academics, The Derek Smith Leadership Academy, Louisville Sports Performance, PEACC Center and other on-campus groups. The student-athletes learn about resources and opportunities available to them.

  • National Student-Athlete Day - National Student-Athlete Day is held in April every year and is an appreciation event for our student-athletes celebrated with a cookout at one of our spring sporting events.

  • Student-Athlete Talent Show - Student-Athlete Talent Show : The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee held its first annual Student-Athlete Talent Show in the 2011 spring semester. Teams performed skits, dance routines, and other talents for the event which raised funds for charity.

  • All Sports Banquet - This is the premier event for Cardinal student-athletes. The banquet is a night of awards and recognition for all our teams and student-athletes to congratulate them on their accomplishments.
